Residents of Buckley are celebrating the opening of a new community banking hub, which sees the long-awaited return of essential financial services to the town. Principality Building Society has now set up shop on the ground floor of Buckley Library, in the space that was previously occupied by public computers, providing convenient access for locals.

This significant development follows years of tireless campaigning led by Councillor Carolyn Preece. In December 2018, Councillor Preece launched a grassroots campaign to address Buckley’s growing banking desert after Lloyds Bank became the last financial institution to close its doors in the town. This closure left many residents without easy access to banking services, prompting the community to rally for action.

Preece’s campaign, supported by local residents, eventually gained traction and culminated in a groundbreaking partnership with Principality Building Society.

“It’s been a very, very long journey,” said Cllr Carolyn Preece. “There were many times when I didn’t think it would happen, but I didn’t give up, and I’m very pleased to say it’s now open. Residents won’t need to travel over miles to the nearest bank anymore, which had cut many off from easy access to their money and face-to-face financial support.”

Javed Anjum, CEO of OneBanx said “We are pleased to expand our strategic partnership with Principality Building Society, in support of their commitment to their Members. OneBanx bridges the gap between customers who depend on bank branches for cash transactions and the convenience of digital banking.”

A Lifeline for Buckley

The new hub provides several vital banking services for both personal and business needs:

  • Principality Mini-Branch: Offering savings, mortgages, and financial advice, with the ability to pay in cheques for those with savings accounts.
  • OneBanx Terminal: A facility enabling customers of any High Street bank to conduct transactions.
  • Free-to-Use ATM: Accessible during library hours (9:30 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday to Friday).
  • Cash Services: Residents and businesses can deposit and withdraw cash, addressing a crucial gap in the area’s banking options.

Principality, the largest building society in Wales, continues to prioritize community engagement. Last year, it contributed over £1.5 million to funding community projects, reflecting its dedication to supporting the local population. As a member-owned institution, Principality operates for the benefit of over 500,000 members.

This partnership offers a much-needed financial lifeline to Buckley, ensuring that the town is no longer cut off from essential banking services. Thanks to the tireless work of campaigners and local leaders, residents can now enjoy the convenience and support they deserve.
